Updating Your Mushbox

When a new BELABOX software update is available, installing it takes about a minute and happens right from the belaUI screen you already use to go live. Here's how to do it safely.

How you'll know an update is ready

BELABOX checks for updates on its own. When one is available, you'll see a notice on the System section of your admin page — usually a small count of available updates and a button to install them.

If you go a while without updating, a reminder message will also appear at the top of your admin page so it's hard to miss. That's your cue to run through the steps below when you get a chance.

Admin page showing the banner: A BELABOX update is available. Scroll down to the System menu to install it.
When an update is waiting, this banner appears at the top of your admin page. Tap System at the bottom to install it.

Open your admin page the same way you always do, using your private link.

💡

Good habit: check for updates every week or two, and always before a big stream. It's much nicer to update on your own schedule than to discover one mid-broadcast.

Before you update

Run through this quick checklist first. The update itself is simple — these steps just keep it smooth.

  • Stop your stream. Never update while you're live. End the broadcast and confirm the encoder is idle.
  • Keep it powered. Plug into wall power if you can, or make sure your battery is well charged. Don't pull power during the update.
  • Use a stable connection. Home WiFi or Ethernet is ideal. It'll work over cellular, but a solid connection avoids interruptions mid-download.
  • Give it a few minutes. Update, wait for the reconnect, and verify — don't start this right as you're trying to go live.
⚠️

The one rule that matters most: do not unplug or power off your Mushbox while it's updating. Let it finish and reconnect on its own.

Installing the update

  1. Open your admin page

Open your admin page using your private link.

  2. Make sure you're not streaming

If the stream is running, stop it first. The main controls should show the encoder as idle.

  3. Open the System section

Scroll to the System area. If an update is available, you'll see it listed here with the number of packages ready to install.

The System section, showing the blue Software update button.
In the System section, tap the blue Software update button. The count shows how much is queued.
  4. Tap the update button

Press the install / update button. BELABOX downloads and applies the update automatically — you don't need to type anything.

Confirmation dialog warning not to remove power while updating, with OK and Cancel buttons.
Tap OK to begin. Don't do this mid-stream, and never cut power while it updates — on battery, make sure it's fully charged first.
  5. Wait for it to finish

You'll see a "software update in progress" message. Your Mushbox will briefly disconnect as it applies the update and restarts the software. This is normal.

Update progress panel: Downloading 215/215, Unpacking, Setting up.
The update moves through phases — downloading, unpacking, then setting up. All normal. Just let it run; it can take a few minutes.
  6. Reconnect and verify

After a short wait, your admin page comes back on its own. Confirm everything looks normal, and you're done.

Update completed, restarting the encoder, with a pink reconnecting banner.
When you see Update completed, the encoder restarts and briefly drops — the pink "reconnecting" banner is expected. Give it a minute and it comes back on its own.

That's it. A quick test stream is a nice way to confirm the update went through cleanly before your next real broadcast.

If something looks off

My admin page didn't come back after the update

Give it a full 2–3 minutes — the software restart plus reconnect can take a moment. If it's still unreachable, power-cycle the Mushbox: turn it off, wait ten seconds, and turn it back on. It should reconnect on its own.

The update seemed to stall or the connection dropped

If your internet cut out mid-download, reopen your admin page and try the update again from the System section. BELABOX will pick up where it needs to. A stronger connection (home WiFi or Ethernet) helps here.

I don't see any update available

That means your Mushbox is already up to date — nothing to do. If you think an update should be there, refresh your admin page and check the System section again.
